Antelope Valley “Bigs” and Their Stats

Posted: December 24, 2010 in AVC Men's Basketball, Pre-Conference

In the early part of the season, Antelope Valley College opponents believed that the weakness of AVC was their guards.  AVC saw full court presses, tight man to man, and what happened?  AVC’s” bigs”, George McGrew and Kyisean Reed ran wild.  The “twin towers” and their back up’s Charles Cole, and Gary Winfield, dominated the opponents and were the scoring machines in the early season.

When opposing coaches saw that AVC could easily break any press, they headed to the dreaded packed in 2-3  zone.  It slowed down AVC’s “bigs” and the game but the wings and guards took over the game and AVC won in other ways.  Reminds me of the state championship team from Riverside a couple of years ago.

Kyisean Reed is leading AVC in the first 11 games in a number of categories;  Points scored per game = 16.4, blocks per game = 1.6, steals = 1.3, and comes in second with 6 rebounds per game.

Reed had played very well and has the capability of taking over a game when ever he wishes.  I expect that the first 11 games are just a warm up for Reed.

Kyisean has signed with D-1 Utah State University

McGrew leads the team with 8.1 rebounds per games and is second in scoring with 10.8 ppg.  George in several games has gotten into early foul trouble that has impacted his success.  George will need to work on his consistency in this area.

A number of D-1 universities are following McGrew for a scholarship offer.

Gary is the first backup “big” into game.  He is scoring 5.7 points per game and is third in rebounds on the team 3.6 ppg.  When Gary got extensive minutes he scored 17 and 11 points along with 6 and 7 rebounds per game.

Charles is a steady back up player who has been getting limited playing time but will key to AVC’s success if foul troubles or injuries occur to AVC’s other “bigs.”
