I am really looking forward to the season for any number of reasons but one of the top reason is to watch sophomoreJason Dunk2 Jason “JJ” Johnson play.  I believe that he will lead the Marauder’s in scoring and steals and is going to have an outstanding season.  The D-1 team who picks him up is going to get a great player.

The tentative agreement between Johnson and the U of Idaho for a official visit for the weekend of 22 October 2011 did not materialize.  U of Idaho received a commitment from Darrington Banks, 6’1 guard from Collin County Texas JUCO on 10/8/2011 that may have affected U of I’s interest in Jason.

Look for a big year for Jason JJ Johnson as this will motivate him even more to prove that he a top D-1 player.

Kyisean4Parsing the WAC http://parsingthewac.blogspot.com/ and Kevin MCCarthy found a story on Kyisean Reed at Utah State University.

So where does this leave Kyisean?  Can he play the 4 at this level?

The Battle at Small Forward

Right now, we know one thing: Kyisean Reed, the athletic junior college transfer, will not be playing on the perimeter this season. It appears the candidates at small forward, Preston Medlin is a strong bet to start at shooting guard, are Mitch Bruneel, Steven Thornton and Antonio Bumpus.

Bumpus has intrigue because he’s so athletic and appears to be a natural scorer. Thornton has earned praise as a defensive stopper. He’s also athletic and he’s gotten stronger over the off-season after sitting out last year as a non-qualifier. Bruneel, from the College of Southern Idaho, reminds coaches of Tyler Newbold. He seems to always be in the right place at the right time.

Bumpus is still trying to shake the rust off because he missed all of preseason conditioning with a bum foot. In fact, come to think of it, USU has had three consecutive years of players missing preseason time with injured foots (Pooh Williams and Nate Bendall). They turned out well, so maybe this is a good sign for Bumpus.

Thoughts on the intra squad scrimmage the day after.

  • The AVC guards are really good.
  • The AVC “bigs” looked confused.
  • AVC’s defense?
  • AVC will be a really good team if the “big” gain some confidence and understand their role of defense, rebounding, and put-backs.
  • Be interesting to see where AVC will be in 10 games.  P.S. That is the end of the Saddleback Tournament.
