The old saying in JUCO basketball is, “You will go as far as your guards take you.” If this holds true this year, AVC has a chance of going a long way.
AVC’s sophomore guards who have been playing together for the Marauders since their freshman year and in the Just Say NO league this summer, have developed a trust and understanding on the basketball court. Without looking, point guard DaShawn Gomez 6’2”, 185 knows where shooting guard Jason Johnson, 6’3”, 195 is and where he is going. Gomez’s uncanny vision and laser-like passing, provides Johnson open shots in stride…just the way he is the most effective. To show how well this has been working this year, Jason Johnson was the MVP of
the Ventura Tournament and DaShawn Gomez on the All-Tournament team.
Another key feature of the the Gomez/Johnson partnership is their maturity and leadership. They are calm, willing to give up scoring to other players, and unflappable on the floor. They believe they lead the best JUCO team in the State of California and set expectations for other team members.
The season is young with only 4 games played but the table below shows how well the AVC’s sophomore guards are working together in the 4-0 record.
| Gomez | Johnson | |
| Scoring Average | 10 | 23 |
| Assist Average | 11 | 3 |
| Rebound Average | 6 | 3 |
In the first four games of the season, these two players are wowing their opponents, their coaching staff, and D-1 universities as well. Gomez has signed with Iona University http://melgru23.wordpress.com/2011/11/10/double-letter-of-intent-signing-at-avc/ and Johnson has not made up his mind on his D-1 destination.
Gomez/Johnson will make sure that the AVC team gels and the freshman continue to improve. AVC will become an increasingly tough team to play.
