Po, Big Reggie, and Larry are going to be key in the outcome of many AVC games this year. Rebounds, defense and scoring from the “bigs” will be key to AVC’s success.
Reggie Murphy, 6’9”, 270 is a sophomore who is headed to Texas Christian University, is a game changer. His size and skill level in middle is something that is not seen regularly in Cal JUCO basketball. He runs the floor well for his size and has great hands. Murphy should be a double-double man this season. Reggie scored 22 points and had 17 rebounds against Ventura and a double-double against LA Valley. This just may be
his breakout year.
Freshman Larry Slaughter, 6’8”, 215, is one of the most adaptable players on the team. He can play the 3, 4, 5, rebound, play defense, shoot the three ball and run the floor. Because of his flexibility on the floor he will get lots of playing time. Larry grey-shirted with AVC last year and it looks like he will complete his AA degree this year and be
available to D-1 schools with 3 years of eligibility left. Iona, Utah State, along with other universities are spending lots of time watching Larry.
Freshman Dwan “Po”, Caldwell, 6’8”, 240, is a very talented freshman player. He has shown some inconsistency in the first 4 games this year but that not unusual for a player without high school experience. He is a beast in practice and when realizes how good he really is, watch out.
At the beginning of the season I thought it would take 10 games for the freshman and new sophomores…all of the above…to work into the rotation and get used to the speed of college basketball. Reggie and Larry are ahead of schedule and Po is on schedule. Fun to watch them improve every game.
